 How to Test

  • We send you accredited radon detectors for the home and workplace as shown here.
  • How many do you need?
    • 2 detectors are used per normal sized home (up to 200m2 ground floor area).
    • Workplaces - see our Radon in Workplaces page.
  • Detectors are left in place for three months to get an accurate average measurement, returned to us for analysis and we then send you a report with the results.
  • Radon is measured in “Becquerels per cubic metre” denoted as Bq/m3.
  • Click the "Order Home Test Kit" button to order online.

  Testing your Home

  • All homes should be tested - even new homes which have radon barriers installed.
  • Radon barriers are very unreliable, particularly under building site conditions.  Studies to date indicate that up to 50% of barriers installed in Ireland are ineffective.
  • The safety action limit is 200 Bq/m3, above which action is recommended.

  Testing Workplaces

  • Workplaces are regulated by The Radiological Protection Act, 1991, and The Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act, 1989.
  • Employers are required to test the workplace and to take remedial action where necessary - the legal action level for radon in the workplace is 400 Bq/m3.
  • To order detectors for your workplace please contact us and we will advise you on the quantities you need and how to implement.
  • For more information and advice see our Radon in Workplaces page.

      National Policy on Radon

The Radiological Protection Institute of Ireland (RPII), is the government agency responsible for matters relating to radiation in Ireland.  They have established the legislation and guidelines above for Workplaces and Homes.

Note that it is now recommended that these tests should be repeated every 5 years to ensure that radon concentrations have not changed in the interim.
